ART WORKS
Conspiracy, 1992

This work consists of a pair of black boxes with gold text each containing: a letter inviting the possessor of the work to a game, a Scotland Yard police elimination record with reference to the artist's fingerprints, an inkpad and a set of five rubber stamps matching the artist's fingerprints. One box contains the left and the other the right hand set of finger print stamps. A theoretical duel is implied in which the artist may find herself outwitted by her own work. However as author of the documented work, the implication is that this can only remain a rhetorical challenge. This suggests that despite artistic liberation the structure of the art world is actually a safe haven that speaks to its own.

Conspiracy was first shown as part of Making History, a solo show at Karsten Schubert gallery, London in I992 and later in the same year as part of British Art, a group show at Barbara Gladstone/ Stein Gladstone gallery, New York and at Tanja Grunert gallery, Cologne in Germany. The work was exhibited later in 1997 as part of L'empreinte exhibition at the Pompidou Centre in Paris. The work was made in an edition of 3 - with an artist's proof, naturally!
