Dear Mr. Herald, 1994

This sculpture consists of a small black metal shovel loaded with caviar. It has a handwritten luggage label which reads:
"Dear Mr. Herald, I took this opportunity to clean up your canvases here in England and to return your caviar to you. Yours sincerely, Abigail Lane".

This was made as part of a group show curated by German artist, Georg Herald at Portikus, Frankfurt in Germany, 1994. The artists made various contributions 'on site' that collectively became the show, Karaoke World Cup Football*. The British contributors were a team of 11 (including Sarah Lucas, Angus Fairhurst, Michael Landy, Georgina Starr, amongst others) working alongside a German team of 11 artists. This specific work made reference to Georg Herald's own caviar paintings for which he was well known. It was exhibited alongside one of these paintings. The work was given to Mr. Herald.

*A return 'match' was staged at South London Gallery a year later. Abigail collaborated with Mat Collishaw to make a different contribution for this. This was a still life on a table with bread board, lemon and knife. Both artists were filmed - their tiny selves trapped inside transparent salt and pepper pots as the footage of them was projected from inside a breadbin (the entrance to which was concealed by a pot of herbs). The tiny soundtrack was The Garden is Becoming a Robe Room by Michael Nyman.
