The Salon, 1996

The Salon took place at Abigail’s live / work studio - the top of Burbage House, Shoreditch, London, on Fridays. It started in 1996 and continued on and off for a few years. People came to get their hair cut by Guy Healy and ostensibly amongst whatever else was going on there, it was simply a hair cutting service for friends. The early visitor book shows entries for Angela Bulloch, Max Wigram, Gregor Muir, Gillian Wearing, Carl Freedman, Sadie Coles, Anya Gallaccio, Georgie Hopton, Mat Collishaw, Tracey Emin, Sarah Lucas, Angus Fairhurst and so on …

There was a mirrored screen backed with an image of a man slumped in a chair … his head shaved with a star, towards which a joke gun was shooting an unfolded Salon flag. There was a standard hairdressing chair and various cubes and glass domes into which the cut hair was gathered in layers and kept. Visitors received a Duchampian - style certificate to mark their visit. At times the salon was something of a club with it’s visitors staying after their appointment with whoever else had accumulated that day.

Guy went on to open a successful ‘proper’ salon some years later – The Hairdressers.
