Inked Chairs, 1992-96

The Inked Chairs are various chairs that have had their seats replaced with cotton covered felt so that they become inkpads. The seats are wet with the ink. The first of these works was called Blue Print. In this work a chair with a blue inkpad seat faces the framed print of a blue bottom which is hung on the wall in front of it. The print is made directly from the body.

It was made in 1992 and was shown in the same year as part of Abigail's solo show Making History at Karsten Schubert gallery in London. It was shown later in Sensation, Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection curated by Norman Rosenthal at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, then touring.

The Inked Chairs are also shown together with the Bottom Wallpaper to create room installations: Kunsthalle Luzern, Switzerland,1992 and Apocalyptic Wallpaper, curated by Donna de Salvo at the Wexner Centre for the Arts Ohio, USA in 1997 are examples of this.
